Oregon, Washington Open Ojai Pac-12 Play With Wins

PAC-12 MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Oregon and Washington won their opening-round dual matches on Day 1 of The Ojai to advance to the second round of the 2016 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships. The Ducks will face fourth-seeded Stanford on Thursday at noon at Libbey Park, while the Huskies will play against third-seeded California at 3 p.m.

Fifth-seeded Oregon was dominant in securing their victory over No. 8 Arizona, winning the match by a score of 4-0. The Ducks secured the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts, as the duo of Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens won on court No. 2 and Cormac Clissold teamed with Thomas Laurent to win on court No. 3. Laurent picked up the first singles win, as he defeated UA’s Jason Jaruvang on court No. 3, 6-0, 6-2. Jayson Amos followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win of his own on court No. 4. Stevens of Oregon clinched the match for the Ducks with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win on court No. 2.

The Huskies won a close match against No. 7-seeded Utah in their championship opener, defeating the Utes, 4-3. The doubles point went to the Huskies after Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer won on court No. 2 by a score of 6-3 to secure the point for the Huskies. Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak won on court No. 3, 6-3, as well. In singles play, it was a battle. Mitch Stewart of Washington won on court No. 1, 7-5, 6-3. Hakak won in three sets for the Huskies to claim the win, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on court No. 3 while Lam won on court No. 6, 7-5, 6-4. Utah’s David Micevski (6-4, 6-4, court No. 2), Egbert Weverink (6-4, 1-6, 6-3, court No. 4) and Parker McGuiness (1-6, 6-3, 6-3, court No. 5) all scored singles points for the Utes.

The 2016 Pac-12 Tennis Championships continue today. The semifinals will take place on Friday, with the championship match scheduled for Saturday. All matches take place at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The women begin singles and doubles action tomorrow at 8 a.m. PT at Ojai Valley Athletic Club. PAC-12 WOMEN’S REGULAR SEASON FINALE

The No. 13-nationally ranked Stanford downed No. 19 USC 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon to capture the Pac-12 regular-season championship. Caroline Lampl clinched her team-best sixth match, defeating Jessica Failla 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 as Stanford turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 match victory.
